WA Science Award Finalists

Western Australian Science and Innovation Minister, John Day today announced the finalists of the 2012 Western Australian Science Awards, including two young researchers with the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research (WAIMR).

Terry Boyle's research aims to identify and improve our understanding of modifiable risk factors for cancer while Jennifer Girschik's research focuses on sleeping patterns and breast cancer.

Both work within the Epidemiology Group at the Nedlands Campus of WAIMR.

The 2012 WA Science awards covered six categories across research, engagement and education. Mr Day said the finalists' accomplishments were outstanding and played an important role in providing continued economic, social and environmental benefits to the State.

"Science plays a vital role in the development of the ideas and innovations that continually improve our lives," he said.

"We should be very proud of the diverse strengths of Western Australia's science and innovation community."

"Driving the world’s biggest radio astronomy project; addressing the need for clean and renewable energy solutions; and identifying modifiable risk factors of cancer are just some of the fantastic achievements of this year's finalists."

"The WA Science Awards recognise and acknowledge outstanding achievement in science research, engagement and education - all important functions in ensuring an overall, scientifically engaged society," he said.

The winners and the 2012 WA Science Hall of Fame Inductee will be announced at a gala dinner attended by the Minister on Thursday October 11, 2012.
