Community Talk Reveals Future of Tackling Melanoma

August 27th, 2010 - Diary Note

Just ahead of summer, the Scott Kirkbride Melanoma Research Centre is bringing cancer researcher Professor John Thompson, the Executive Director of the Melanoma Institute Australia - one of the world's largest melanoma treatment and research centres - to Perth for a free community seminar.

'Melanoma Unplugged' will focus on what the future holds for better treating and managing melanoma, the most common cancer in Australians aged 15 to 39.

Professor Thompson's current research projects include investigating whether certain melanomas are resistant to chemotherapy and looking at chemotherapy techniques for limb tumours which can't be treated surgically.

On top of his role at the Melanoma Institute Australia, Professor Thompson is the Chair of Melanoma and Surgical Oncology of the University of Sydney, based at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

He's also President of the International Sentinel Node Society, Chairman of the Australian and New Zealand Melanoma Trials Group, Chairman of the NSW Melanoma Network, and Executive Director and Research Director of the Sydney Melanoma Unit.

The Unit, which sees and treats one in three newly-diagnosed melanoma patients in NSW each year, is internationally recognised for its high standards of patient care and its clinical research activities.

The free seminar is on Wednesday November 10.
