The Western Australian Institute for Medical Research (WAIMR) is continuing its efforts to inspire more young people to take up medical research careers with seven WA students awarded $2,500 vacation scholarships.

WAIMR Director Professor Peter Klinken said the Institute offered the scholarships annually over the summer holiday period to give students an opportunity to boost their knowledge and contribute to human health.

"Not only are we, as an Institute, focused on delivering advances in medical research, it's also part of our role to attract and inspire the next generation of scientists and that's exactly what these scholarships are created to do," he said.

"We're thrilled to have these new students on board at WAIMR and are excited about the potential benefits of their projects."

This year's recipients are UWA students Vanessa Pang, Matthew Vandenberg, Rikki Brown, Kyle Yau, Maria Isabel Lopez Sanchez, Taleesha Conlan and Hannah Montgomery.

Their projects will range from investigating a protein that may lead to new treatments for leukaemia to research, to furthering knowledge about genetics and structures within the cell's nucleus called paraspeckles.
