Schizophrenia: The Search for Solutions

Schizophrenia Seminar

The latest advances in the search for solutions to the devastating brain disorder schizophrenia will be the focus of a public seminar on May 2 in Perth.

The Western Australian Institute for Medical Research (WAIMR), together with the Mental Illness Fellowship of WA (MIFWA), will host the event in the lead up to Schizophrenia Awareness Week which runs from May 20 to 27.

The seminar is designed to provide an insight into recent research and new programs linked to the condition.

Speakers will include Sibylle Schwab, head of WAIMR's Laboratory for Neuropsychiatric Genetics, Assen Jablensky, University of WA Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Centre for Clinical Research in Neuropsychiatry, Gerald Watts, UWA and Royal Perth Hospital Professor of Medicine, and MIFWA Executive Director Sandra Vidot.

In Australia up to 2,000 new cases of schizophrenia are diagnosed across the country each year. Worldwide, the disorder affects almost one in 100 people during their lifetime.
